Teesside University recently opened its new flagship £20m, four-storey, Teaching and Conference building - The Curve. The Curve is a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly building, with high quality architectural design and striking gold-coloured panelling.
The journey started in early 2013 when Broadstock were invited to use their experience to consult with stakeholders and then provide space analysis, a detailed specification brief and a budget benchmarking matrix for the FF&E package.
Over the next eighteen months, working alongside the design team for the project which consisted of architects Austin-Smith:Lord LLP, external project managers Evolve 2 Consult Ltd, builders BAM Construction, the University's Estates Department and several internal departments, Broadstock developed product ideas, layouts, and fabrics and finishes for all areas of the building which reflected its modern, design-led feel.
Teesside University recognised the need to change the academic delivery in the new building and we introduced plectrum tables into classrooms to promote collaboration by enabling students to work in groups of various sizes and allowing teachers to interact more easily with them.
This approach was also followed with the installation of a collaborative Lecture Theatre. Students can still all face the lecturer when required, but can also work in groups when appropriate. The lecturer can circulate the room to improve interaction with the groups. Where these innovative theatres have been installed previously, the institutions have also seen an increase in room occupancy as the design allows for utilisation of the space outside formal lectures which increases classroom capacity and helps timetabling at peak periods.
The scheme consisted of a mixture of standard product, fitted furniture and bespoke items, specially designed and manufactured for this scheme. Due to Broadstock's unique mix of in-house design and manufacturing facilities and first rate external supply partners, we were able to take this exciting project from initial concepts to finished reality.
Good communication is the key to a successful project. The Broadstock team included staff from all relevant sections of the business including design, product sourcing, manufacturing, project management and installation to ensure that essential project milestones were achieved and the FF&E package was delivered on time and on budget.
